Girl holding her baby sister in Porto Romano, Albania. Porto Romano is the site of several old factories used for the production of pesticides and leather tanning. The sites of these factories have never been decontaminated of the toxic carcinogenic chemicals lindane, chromiuim VI and Chlorobenzine which are still heavily polluting the area. Around 6000 families have moved to the area in search of work in nearby Durres and are forced to live amongst the chemical waste because they have no money to rent or buy property so must squat in the toxic area. It was designated a UNEP disaster area in 2001.
